About Catoctin Curtain

Catoctin Curtain is an independent English language editorial publication about community theatre, rehearsal culture and participation around the Catoctin region of Maryland. It is a new publication. It is not the former Thurmont Thespians organisation, it does not sell tickets, and it does not operate a theatre.

We serve people who take part in local theatre or want to: performers, backstage volunteers, parents, first timers and attentive audience members. Our writing assumes goodwill and limited time. Most community productions run on borrowed evenings and shared skills rather than formal departments.

The publication has three topics. Rehearsal Room looks at preparation and communication before a show, from prompt books to last minute schedule changes. Backstage Map explains the supporting roles that hold a production together, including stage management, props, costumes, lighting and sound. Taking Part looks at participation itself: how newcomers join, what volunteering asks of people, and how to read a production as a whole.

Our original angle is practical. We write decision tools and reader questions that help someone understand what a rehearsal needs, who does what, and where a production fits together. We describe roles in broad terms rather than as fixed staffing formulas. Technical rigging, electrical installation and hazardous stage effects stay outside our scope.

We do not claim measured search volumes or research rankings. Where we describe a common practice, we present it as an example to think with, not a rule for any particular company.
